Summary
In 1929, the Mexican government declared war on the Catholic Church. Priests were killed and exiled, churches looted and destroyed, and Mexican Catholics were forced to live through unfortunate persecution. But in the darkest moments, the faith of the nation's Catholics was unshakeable. Courageous in the face of harsh persecution, Mexico's faithful, known as Cristeros, refused to cower in the face of intimidation, and took up arms during a three-year war between freedom-loving citizens and the brutal government of the President Plutarco Elias Calles.
