En enero del 2002, Steve McCurry y el equipo de National Geographic regresaron al campo de refugio Nasir Bagh, en Pakistán en donde fue originalmente fotografiada. Mediante una serie de contactos, ella fue identificada como Sharbat Gula, ahora como una mujer casada y viviendo con su familia en una remota región de Afganistán.
